Description
This statue is in the Lafayette Cemetery in New Orleans, barefoot, weeping, and holding an urn. The weeping woman is a common funerary symbol, and it represents maternal love, grief, sorrow. Her bare feet represent humility and the inevitability of death. The urn, which has represented the ashes of the deceased since ancient times, is a symbol of the death of the earthly body and its return to dust.
